SEND provision

SEND (Special Education Needs and Disabilities) provision has been one of my main priorities since I was elected, supporting parents with individual pieces of casework, campaigning for the Selby SEND school and trying to assist with the lengthy process of obtaining and implementing an EHCP. If I can offer any specific support to you and your family, please let me know.

Better buses

Bus services are vital to places like Selby and Kippax. They help people get to work or college, and are so important in tackling loneliness, particularly for older people. For too long, bus services have been thinned out in rural communities like the Selby area, and places like Kippax, Methley, Micklefield and Allerton Bywater feel let down by slow and unreliable services which don’t suit their needs. That’s why I’ve made improving our connectivity a top priority, holding a public ‘bus surgery’ right after the 2024 General Election where local people made their views clear to Arriva and the North Yorkshire Mayor.

So far:

I’m pleased to say that the campaigning on this issue has started to pay dividends. Since the General Election, we’ve seen frequencies doubled on the 164 and 476, improving connectivity between Selby and Leeds / Selby and Pontefract, and delivering a direct link with Selby Hospital for people in Hambleton, Thorpe Willoughby and Monk Fryston.

Latest outcomes:

I heard concerns loud and clear about the withdrawal of bus services from Leeds Road, and so I took up the campaign to see a service reinstated. After months of pushing Arriva and North Yorkshire Council for a solution, I’m delighted that a new service has been introduced from October 2025 - one that runs between Selby and Thorpe Willoughby along Leeds Road. This will be hugely welcomed by people along Leeds Road, and I hope to see the service well-used.

Next steps:

More broadly, I’m looking forward to seeing bus franchising rolled out in West Yorkshire, where the Labour Mayor is taking buses back under public control for the first time in decades. This will give West Yorkshire Combined Authority meaningful control over fares and timetables, as well as seeing new buses introduced in Kippax and Methley.

Nationally, we’re bringing forward the Bus Services Bill which makes it easier for communities to take back control of their buses. In North Yorkshire, I’ll continue to work with Mayor David Skaith as he seeks a model which suits our large, rural county. I want to see buses that people can rely on and our villages properly connected, and I’ll keep fighting until that’s the case.
