Keir Mather, Member of Parliament for Selby, first elected as the area’s MP in July 2023 in a historic by-election, has reached two years representing the town.
Speaking about this milestone, Keir said:
“It’s hard to believe we’ve reached two years, and I cannot tell you what a privilege representing Selby has been.
I remain humbled and grateful that local residents put their trust in me to fight their corner and represent their interests both in Selby and in Westminster. My vow going forward is to continue to work tirelessly to make sure our area is never taken for granted again.
I’m fighting every day to deliver on the issues that matter to local people. For decent and reliable public transport for all, for an NHS with the time to care, for police with the tools they need to tackle crime, and for an education system where every child in Selby reaches their full potential.”
On achievements in the last year, Keir added “I have lobbied Arriva relentlessly for a better bus service in our area, securing the doubling of services on the Selby to Leeds and Selby to
Pontefract routes. The White Rose Agreement was signed in Selby to deliver collaboration
between our Yorkshire Mayors, and North Yorkshire has been announced as a pilot area for
rural bus franchising.
On the SEND School, I’ve been pushing Ministers to see that this school opens and
construction starts this summer. I’ve recently met the new Principal and they’re ready to hit the ground running to deliver for children across the Selby District.
I've pushed for our fair share of new government funding, securing new nursery places, school breakfast clubs, and more police on the beat.
When I was re-elected a year ago, I said I wouldn't let you down. I'm as committed now as I was then to making sure you feel better off, and it's the privilege of my life to represent our part of the world.”
Mr Jones, from Brayton said: “After contacting Keir’s office, he helped me with the issue I was
having. I would like to thank Keir for promptly dealing with my complaint. At last, we have a local MP who listens and acts.”
Keith Franks, former Mayor of Selby, said: “Keir has been a great support to our community,
supporting our Selby NUM advice group, which helps retired miners suffering from industrial
disease. He has brought it to the forefront in Parliament and advocated for us locally. He’s
supported us with the Mineworkers Pension Scheme and with the BCSSS pension surplus
sharing. He’s supported us in
the fight for a public inquiry into Orgreave. I’d like to thank Keir for all the ways he is available to support his constituents and our community with any issues they have.”
