Keir Mather MP welcomes York Hospital expansion for cancer care

York Hospital has announced that is stands to benefit from a £2.4m investment to improve cancer care for patients in the local area.

The York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to develop a purpose-built cancer support centre. Opening in early 2026, the centre will create a warm, welcoming environment for patients, and is set to be designed with input from clinicians and patients alike.

The Selby area has thousands of people who use York Hospital regularly. Speaking about the announcement, Keir said: "I know that this space will make a huge difference for those living with cancer in our region."

"Some 3.5 million people are living with cancer in the UK today. Evidence clearly shows that we need to completely reform the way that we diagnose, treat, and support them. The Government’s 10-year plan for the NHS outlines exactly how we will do this, and I know that centres like this one at York will be vital as we improve care and outcomes for cancer patients in our part of Yorkshire."

He added "I know there’s lots more work to do to rebuild our healthcare system but I’m really proud of the action that the Labour Government has taken so far to stabilise the NHS and bring down waiting times for those waiting for cancer treatment. We won't rest until our health service is back on its feet, allowing its brilliant staff to do what they do best."
